The challenges in building digitization are manifold and require pragmatic solutions. One of the main problems is that extensive physical data lines often have to be laid in the buildings to control the technical building equipment (TGA). This process is time-consuming, associated with increased fire risks, and economically problematic, especially for existing buildings, due to long payback periods.

Another problem is the programming and addressing of the individual components, which often takes more time than planned. This is mainly due to the fact that there is a lack of skilled personnel who can reliably perform the complex programming tasks based on protocols such as KNX or BACNET.

Physical data lines can also be damaged during construction, leading to delays and costly repairs. Providers of wired solutions also charge high costs for their components and often demand expensive licensing fees for commissioning software and control of the installed devices.

The solution to these problems is to rely on modern wireless mesh networks. The goal is to leave the existing technical infrastructure largely unchanged and instead add intelligent, network enabled components. These components make analog building consumers controllable and intelligent without the need for miles of data lines.

A key element of this approach is an "intelligent backbone" consisting of sensors that monitor and analyze the building's usage. Only when the building understands how it is being used, based on this data, operating can costs be optimized and energy consumption managed efficiently.

Existing building lighting wiring is the ideal infrastructure for these smart sensors. An important advantage of this approach is that the sensors and components can be easily commissioned and parameterized.
